A Model for the Youth
Yun Daiying (1895-1931)’s family was actually from Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, though he was born in Wuchang, Hubei Province. As one of the earliest communist leaders in China, he was a great Marxist, a famous statesman, theorist and publicist. He was praised as a “leader admired by the Chinese youth”.
August 12, 2015 saw the 120th anniversary of the birth of Comrade Yun Daiying. On the occasion, Yun Daiying’s Memorial Hall was first opened to the public free of charge. The Hall is located at No. 500, Jinling Road, Changzhou, Jiangsu, east of the Former Residence of Lü Simian, where Wang Zhonghan, the uncle of Yun Daiying, rented the house in 1920s. Overlooking the east, the Memorial Hall has the style of the traditional Qing-dynasty architecture of two lined quadrangles in two rows, which reflects the special features of the time and the locality.
“Yun Daiying, a Model for the Youth” being its theme, Yun Daiying’s Memorial Hall provides a detailed introduction to Yun’s life and revolutionary career with over 70 exhibition boards. The Hall consists of five display rooms, covering an area of 360 m2, with a 120-metre long visit route. The First Room is an antechamber in the south, with an inverted-V roof, of one floor in the three-room width, housing a set of Yun’s standing statues. The Second Room is an antechamber in the north, also with an inverted-V roof, of one floor in the four-room width, demonstrating Yun’s lecture room. The Third Room is the back balcony in the south, designed in Kuanyin pocket pediment style, of two floors in the four-room width, setting the group sculptures on the eve of the Uprising. Room IV is the back balcony in the north, with an inverted-V roof, of two floors in the four-room width, showing the scene of bedchamber in Jiangnan folk style. Room V is an auxiliary room of 1 floor in two-room width, providing the view of a kitchen in Jiangnan. There are some other buildings such as patios, wing rooms and auxiliary lanes, all of which maintain the graceful bearing of Jiangnan with overhanging eaves, ink- colored tiles, grey bricks and white walls, and beautiful wooden window grilles.
